SANDA WEIGL: "GYPSY KILLER"
Location: Makor
Date/Time: Monday, June 2nd, 8pm
Price: $15.00 all sections
Tomorrow evening at Makor (for the few not in the know, a very warm and
vibrant Jewish cultural arts space in Manhattan, a few blocks from Lincoln
Center
at 35 West 67th Street, between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue) there
will be a very special performance by Sanda Weigl. Her music is steeped in the
Romanian gypsy tradtion, and featured on the program with Sanda will be
Anthony Coleman and Ted Reichman. From what I understand, Pablo Aslan will be
playing bass and there will be two or three other musicians in the ensemble. I
thought this performance might interest members of the list for a varitey of
reasons. Firstly, this is music very much infused by the same musical treasure
trove that also provides all manner of inspiration and sustenance to a
tremendous
variety of klezmer music. And then certainly the name Anthony Coleman rings
a bell for many list members as one of the pivotal "neo-klezmer" innovators
with all of his activities associated with the Knitting Factory. In fact the
title "Gypsy Killer" is also the rubric on Sanda's recent CD, put out on the
Knitting Factory label (www.knittingfactory.com).
At the Makor website there is the following blurb:
"After escaping political persecution in East Berlin, Sanda Weigl came to New
York with only her voice-establishing herself as the 'Downtown Gypsy Queen'.
Weigl has recently been invited to collaborate on the upcoming Kronos Quartet
album. San Diego's Union Tribune says of Weigl, "Sounding at times like a Tom
Waits-bred cross between chanteuse Cesaria Evora and German vocal visionary
Dagmar Krause, Sanda draws from her Romanian Gypsy heritage to create music
steeped in tradition, yet very much of the moment." Pianist Anthony Coleman and
accordionist Ted Reichman join her as featured guests."
Sanda Weigl and Anthony Coleman will also be appearing the following week
(next Monday, June 9th) at the 32nd International Moers Jazz Festival (for
those
of you in Europe and able to make the trek!) and there is a nice assessment of
Sanda's upcoming performance there at the following link:
