The Ma Nishtana was/is traditionally done in a bilingual Yiddish
Hebrew version. This was a very old tradition in Eastern Europe.
Since the youngest child asks the questions it was not always assumed
that the child had learned hebrew yet or could read at all yet. In
Williamsburg I have bought a chart of pictures that the child would
look at to remember which "kashe" goes next when he recites the four
questions. My daughter used it when she was small.
BTW - the Yiddish versions of the hagada songs are among the oldest
Yiddish songs still sung.
