Judith,
thank you for being so frank in your assessment -- it's fresh air,
and it does a lot of good to our discussions!
I happen to agree with you -- although I think in the "De-gendering"
article Edwin was trying to fiddle with the notion of gender studies,
and this topic is particularly culture-oriented (that is, I feel that
all of us non-North Americans either have a different take on the
subject, or have been exposed to it in entirely different ways...).
Altogether, I enjoyed the article; but I'll go over the quotes and
try to understand better what you mean.
Regarding the Grove "Jewish Music" entry, I have another caveat --
that is, that the "Italian" traditions are presented as a sub-gender
of Sephardi music, and do not seem to deserve a separate treatment
(as, for instance, does Jewish music in China...).
But, in general I find the entry quite good, and a good match to the
masterful "Music" entry in the Encyclopaedia Judaica.
