Droshe Geshank

I was doing a little presentation last night about Eastern European Jewish
weddings and the dances.  A question came up about the droshe geshank that I
couldn't answer and thought maybe someone from the list might know.  Was the
custom of the badkhn's announcing who gave which gift strictly a Jewish
custom, or did some of the surrounding non-Jewish communities also have
similar customs of announcing the gifts during the wedding celebration?
