Re: Greek influences on Israeli Mediterranean music

Sorry, this is not about Greek/Israeli music, but: the story of Greek
influences on *Yiddish* music (and vice versa) seems to be quite interesting
too, starting in the 18th century in Moldavia & Walachia, when the Greeks
ruled these regions. There was an important cross-fertilization of Greek,
Romanian and Yiddish music far into the 19th century.

Today, there is still a bunch of shared Greek/Yiddish repertoire (think of
'Der Heyser Bulgar', 'Yoshke furt avek' etc). Martin Schwartz and Dutch
Stichting Sferra have organized a series of concerts in Holland & Belgium
this fall, which deals with exactly this music. The musicians are Brave Old
World and the Smyrna Trio, Martin Schwartz will give lectures before some of
the concerts.
