Yes, you are correct--it is Greek for "anointed." Jesus's common name was (I 
assume) Yeshu (or Yeshuah) bar Yoseif. Anointed ironically enough could be 
anyone anointed--including political Kings as well as prophets. However 
"messiah" has taken on added connotations since its redefinition after the 
time of Jesus.
