The Springfield (MA) Union News has published an article by Ronni Gordon:
Joe (Yosl) Kurland hums a tune and asks a visitor if it's happy or sad.
The answer: It's both.
And that's the essence of the music he has performed for 20 years
with the Wholesale Klezmer Band. Plaintive, joyous, melancholy,
playful - all those words describe the sound of the music and its
Yiddish lyrics.

And the Valley Advocate (Western Massachusetts weekly) has published
an article by Amy Kroin:
The band's recently released CD, Sing for Peace, Dance for Joy, shows
how tight and dynamic the interplay among the eight musicians has
become. There's a good deal of humor on the album, and plenty of
songs worth dancing to. But the disc also has its quiet and
introspective moments. Indeed, spiritual concerns and an interest in
social justice informs the music on all four of the band's
recordings; over the course of its career, the group has tackled
issues ranging from poverty to Soviet repression to the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
