I don't think we should translate "soul" or "swing' because I don't think it's
what Jewish Music is about.
I agree with Irwin that Klezmer is only part of it. But at least we could
address that part. The rest being less defined I think. Let's see... What's
there in common between Yiddish theater, a Yiddish folksong written in 1880,
and one written in 1930, and Bei Mir Bistu Shein (or Mr. Shein, as my friend
thought it was called!) and a piece by Lazar Weiner. In Poland, and in the
Maramures?
If there is something and we can name it, then that's the "word'.
Meanwhile I think we could probably more easily address the "word" for Klezmer.
Something that is a perfect mix between sorrow and joy?
Is there a word for tango?
