Julian,
Fascinating find.
Kindly contact me off list with as much information as you are able,
including catalog numbers, matrix numbers, etc. I'll do what I can. If the
collection includes any Goura Jan (not sure of the spelling), please know
that she was Jewish also, and evidently performed in nearly two dozen
languages and recorded for Gramophone.
There is a whole 78s collector/researcher community (I get 100s of email
postings per week) and I'l try to tap into that expertise. To music list
members who may come across similar treasures, please know that the most
important piece of information you can provide on a 78 (in addition to the
printed information on the label) is the matrix number Julian refers to.
This is the number or combination of numbers and letters in the "lead out"
section of the shellac towards the center hole. Matrix numbers may be
machine stamped or often, handwritte. With a matrix number, depending on
how well a particular label has been researched, it can be possible to
definitively determine what date a master recording was made, in what city
and by what engineer. This is true, for example, for nearly any Gramophone
pressing.
Best,
Joel
