The series of musicals Nunsense, a very popular and apparently quite
gentle spoof of Catholic women religious, will premiere its fifth show
in the Twin Cities this week. Entitled Meshuggah-Nuns, it takes place
on a cruise ship with a Borscht Belt theme, with Fiddler on the Roof as
the scheduled entertainment. When all the cast but Tevye fall ill, the
nuns offer to put on a show, with Tevye providing Yiddish coaching. At
least according to the article I read, the director went to some lengths
to assure a high dramaturgical standard for the Jewish elements of the
show. Apparently, the productions have always done a very good job of
portraying the culture of Catholicism and shows have many fans among
those faithful. Given that there has always been a substantial audience
of loyal Catholics for these shows, it seems doubtful that they could be
characterized as weapons of Mass destruction.
