Jewish Music course, a slight reprise

Thanks to Judith for suggesting the JFE group. But now, having now joined
the JFE and read through their discussion on what turned out to be
developing a syllabus for a course about the "Anthropology/Ethnography of
Jews and Judaism" I am convinced that there is room for a continued
discussion about a Jewish music course on this list, if the members are
interested (run-on sentence). So, returning to my initial inquiry:
What subjects would you consider to be absolutely primary for a
sophomore/junior level survey course?
