JOB POSTINGS: HEAD TEACHING STAFF
The Conservatory for Judaic Performing Arts / L?École Supérieure
des arts judaïques de la scène (Montreal) is
seeking qualified individuals to fill three head teacher positions --
one in each performing arts section (music, dance, narrative forms).
<bold>
DEADLINE for the submission of applications:
June 15, 2002 (postmark date)
NO LATE OR INCOMPLETE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED.
CURRICULUM CONCEPT
The Conservatory for Judaic Performing Arts / L?École Supérieure
des arts judaïques de la scène is international in scope and
open to participants of all cultural backgrounds. Our four week
intensive summer school program is scheduled to be inaugurated in
2003. The Conservatory will offer intermediary and advanced training
in music, dance, and narrative forms, to accomplished individuals
(professional or amateur), with an emphasis on Judaic content. Our
program will offer participants the opportunity to explore the roots
of our varied Jewish identities and traditions, while at the same time
embracing innovative and progressive attitudes, ideas and cultural
expressions. Furthermore, through our audience appreciation program,
we aim to sensitize and educate Jewish communities and the public at
large about what has been, what is and what can be considered Judaic
performing arts. We are committed to excellence in the study of the
performing arts as a personal and social healing force and as a
vehicle for intercultural creativity and communication.
Disciplinary rigor and interdisciplinarity are both central components
of our program. Each area of study (music, dance and narrative forms),
will be taught individually and interdisciplinary work will be
encouraged. Both will be led by thematic focus with topics such as
Tikkun Olam: Reparation and the Shadow Side,
Identity, Exile, and
Boundaries. We define interdisciplinarity as a
holistic and transformative process that has at its core a deliberate
integration between procedures, materials and discourses within the
different performing arts sections, and those of other fields of
knowledge, (such as anthropology, Kabbalah, politics and technology).
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
For the seventy or so students who will be successful in their
application to the Conservatory, an intensive learning and living
experience will be offered. The demands of the program are consistent
with our objective to foster excellence and innovation in a
noncompetitive environment while imparting a solid knowledge base.
Mornings will begin with a choice of mindful group activities (for
example, meditation, yoga and devotional practice). Students will then
follow programmed study including contextualizing cultural expressions
and creative process training, master classes according to their
performing arts section (music, dance, narrative forms), and directed
practice sessions. The contextualizing sessions (including the
languages, sociology and anthropology within each performing arts
section), will transmit both what can be called the canon (material
and approaches as close as possible to the archival), and what can be
called the interpretive.
The afternoon program will be focused on interdisciplinary thematic
work. Evenings will be devoted to group activities that could include
recitals, films, jamming sessions, lectures and roundtable
discussions. There will be a strong emphasis on the integration of
community. As such, many of the program elements will be open to the
public at large. Additionally, the community will be considered a
significant resource. Field trips and community meetings will be an
important part of the program.
PERFORMING ARTS SECTIONS
An emphasis will be placed on diverse cultural expressions (for
example Sephardic, Mizrachi and Ashkenazi), in each of the performing
arts sections and within the interdisciplinary thematic work.
There will be one Head Teacher for each section.
The faculty to student ratio will be approximately 1/7.
The number of teachers may vary within each performing arts section.
