The Queens Museum of Art will present "The Rom of Ridgewood", an original
photo commission by Yale Strom portraying the daily life of the Rom (Gypsy)
communities of Ridgewood and adjacent Queens neighborhoods. Photographs,
books and music depict the Rom's traditions of work, play, food and music.
(March 22 - July 7). Other related events will highlight the exhibit:
March 24th, 2 p.m.: Yale Strom's band, Hot Pstromi, will present a program
of klezmer and Rom music from Eastern Europe, with vocalist Elizabeth
Schwartz and Rom accordionist extraordinaire Peter Stan along with special
Rom guests; after the concert, Strom will discuss his experiences among the
Rom in Central and Eastern Europe and sign copies of his book "Uncertain
Roads: Searching for the Gypsies".
April 14th, 2 p.m.: Strom's acclaimed documentary film, "Carpati: 50 Miles,
50 Years", will be presented. "Carpati" is the story of a Holocaust
survivor who returns to his childhood home (in the Carpathian Ukraine) for
the first time in 50 years, and his unique relationship with his Rom
neighbors. A testament fo man's faith and fate, the film features klezmer
and Rom music from the region.
