I taped a morning service at the Sofia Church in Salonica once, starting at
5:00am. The cantors used a huge rotating chandelier which went from the
ceiling to the ground. There were four cantors and each had a manuscript
before them which was then rotated occasionally like a lazy Susan at a
Chinese restaurant. In this way the parts were exchanged. The Byzantine
chant they sing is very old, and apparently so is this practice. Josh
