This reminds me of a time when I was in the Ethnic Dance Theatre
Choir in Minneapolis. We usually sang Balkan or Slavic music, and I
think the group did so quite well, at that. But as the repertoire of
the dancers widened its geographical spread, the choir's music did,
too. We learned a song from a remote Russian republic from a
recording sung by a Westerner, without even a correct transcription
of the words. Then a professional dance troupe from that very ethnic
group came to do a workshop with the dancers, and two of them came to
coach us on singing; imagine our chagrin when they couldn't even
recognize the language we were singing. Enough said!
