RE: Who was Isaac Nathan? (fwd)



Isaac Nathan has a significant entry in the book "Australian Genesis" by
john Levi and  G. Bergman. This is a history of the Jewish community in
Australia and is well worth tracking down. I think it has recently been
reprinted.

*To the above very helpful biog, may I add some updates for anyone
interested?  Recent publications include:

1. a complete facsimile reprint of all the editions of The Hebrew Melodies
with full intro and commentary, by Frederick Burwick and Paul Douglass,
published by University of Alabama Press 1988.  0 8173 0373 1

2.  Byron's Hebrew Melodies by Thomas L. Ashton Routledge & Keegan Paul
 London 1972 0 7100 7173 6 a study of the whole project and its history.

3. The Hebrew Melodist:  A Life of Isaac Nathan "Father of Australian
Music" [sic] by Catherine Mackerras Sydney 1963.  The author is mother of
the eminent English orchestral conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, who is
Nathan's great-great-great-grandson.
