March 9-24, 2002 

 Berkeley, California

The Berkeley Richmond Jewish Community Center presents the 17th Annual Jewish 
Music Festival March 9-24, 2002 at locations in the East Bay, San Francisco and 
Marin. Highlights of the two-week celebration of klezmer, Yiddish, Sephardic, 
classical and world music include the Gerard Edery Ensemble: Music in the Land 
of Three Faiths, performing songs from the Golden Age of Spain, when Jews, 
Muslims and Christians forged a common musical language; Shashmaqam Bukharan 
Jewish Ensemble showcasing the music and dance traditions of Central Asian 
Jews; Eyal Sela & Darma, an Israeli ensemble acclaimed for its eclectic 
East-West mix of original music; Bay Area ensembles Kitka and Davka in their 
premiere collaborative program; New Yiddish Songs for the 21st Century, 
original music by Joshua Waletzky, performed with Klezmer Conservatory Band 
members Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer; Healing in Hessen: Jewish Music 
Returns to a German Town, a classical and liturgical concert with German 
violinist Matthias Erbe and Cantor Stephen Saxon of the San Francisco Klezmer 
Experience, to benefit the restoration of a German synagogue; and Soles on 
Fire: Community Klezmer Dance Party, led by Michael Alpert, renowned dance 
instructor, klezmer revival pioneer and a founding member of the famed ensemble 
Brave Old World. Featuring an all-star band with fellow BOW members Kurt
