Hasidic New Wave's Greg Wall shows up on Neshama Carlebach's new CD,
'Ani Shelach; (Sameach). Carlebach is the oldest daughter of the late,
beloved singing rabbi, Shlomo Carlebach. The album features eight songs
by her father, two traditional numbers, and three original songs,
including the title track, which sets the Priestly Blessing into a
tasteful, soul-pop arrangement worthy of Mariah Carey -- this could
actually be a radio hit, as could the album's other pop ballad, 'City of
Walls.'

As was her father's practice, Neshama Carlebach sets classic pieces of
Hebrew liturgy in arrangements that combine ancient or original melodies
with modern dressing. The result is infused with a folksy soulfulness,
here given touches of pop-jazz (the Bruce Hornsby-like keyboards on
'Pe'ero Alay'), Middle Eastern rhythms and swing. She even offers a funk
version of the standard party tune, 'Simon Tov.' In sum, 'Ani Shelach'
is an eclectic, contemporary Jewish pop album of timeless spirit on
which Neshama Carlebach steps out from the shadow of her father and
stakes a claim to her own identity as a visionary artist.
