Not quite Afghanistan but not too far away: "The Music of the Mountain
Jews," from the Anthology of Music Traditions in Israel series, is a
terrific CD of music from the eastern Caucasus -- Azerbaijan, Chechnya,
Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkar. I know that Simon carries this one and it's
great -- made my year-end wrap-up column for 2001.
