I went to shul Tuesday evening, expecting to attend the usual small kaddish
minyan. Instead, a special service was held. With word of mouth and
e-mail, at least 100 of us learned of the service and attended. We prayed
for the dead, for the recovery of the injured, and for peace. In response
to many requests, the service was held again yesterday. I wasn't there (I
was recovering from having a tooth removed surgically), but I'm told that at
least 100 more showed up.
The Rabbi began Tuesday's service by remarking that prayer has been used by
Jews in hard times to bring solace to the ones who pray. It also
strengthens the group and - perhaps most important - it supports and gives
comfort to those who are suffering emotionally.
