Thought list members might be interested. Halkias, I believe, was a teacher of
Andy Statman, and recorded some beautiful Epirotika albums for Folkways in the
70's with Sam Chianis on cimbalom.
The documentary film "Pericles in America" will be screened Wednesday evening,
July 18, outdoors at Socrates Sculpture Park, Broadway & Vernon Blvd in Long
Island City, (Queens) NYC. Free admission. At 7:30 p.m.there will be a
pre-screening performance of Epirot Greek music by George Stathos, clarinet;
Vasilis Patrikis, violin; Gabe Kontos, laouto; & Yanni Moutsakis, defi. The film
begin at sunset (approximately 8:30) "Filmed in Greece and Astoria, Pericles in
America is a warm and intimate portrait of immigrant clarinetist Pericles
Halkias and the local Epriot-Greek community. Each summer, Pericles returns to
his village in Greece to perform at community gatherings. The film documents
these journeys, as well as life in America for Pericles, his family, and fellow
musicias" The filmaker, John Cohen, and Pericles Halkias (who is in his 90's!)
are expected to be in attendance. Greek food will be available for purchase. The
film will be projected outdoors on a large screen with the Manhattan skyline in
the background. Some folding chairs will be available. Folks often bring picnic
baskets and blankets to spread on the grass, or bring folding lawn chairs. For
