The musical characteristics are:

- fast dance in 2/4
- 4-bar sections; where it's eight bars, it's A1/A2
- melody mostly consisting of 16th notes with a lot of repetitions of notes
and 4-note-phrases; 
  typical are also sequences of pairs of bound notes, 
   like:   /ag gf fe ed /d      or     /fg gf fe ed /d
- small melodical steps, few jumps; limited melodical range (think as narrow
as possible)
- melody often in minor or major (freygish or misheberakh seems to be less 
typical)
- it's more exhausting for the musicians than for the dancers ;-)
