Yekke refers to a German word: Jacke, which means jacket. German Jews were often called Yekke because they had a tendency to dress secularly...in jackets and ties as opposed to in tunics, etc. My ex-husband taught me the word years ago, as a way to explain the German Jewish part of his family who would be deeply offended to be referred to as anything but "of the Hebraic persuasion." It's really a way of saying that someone is being hoity toity, (particularly if they are German speakers)....or as my Bubbe Elke would say: hoitche toitche.
Love and knishes,
