I'd never heard of Galicia being part of the Russian empire, only the
Austro-Hungarian, from 1772 - 1917 (according to
http://www.mayoff.com/winter97page06.html, at least). But was there a draft
in the Austro-Hungarian empire too? Naftule Brandwein, also from Galicia, has
1884 - 1963 on his gravestone, but in the New York register of deaths, the
birthdate's 1889.
