On Sunday, April 29th, from 2-5pm The Workmen¹s Circle Boston
District celebrates 100 years dedicated to Yiddishkayt and social
justice with a cultural festival and concert, ³From the Lower East
Side to Blue Hill Avenue.² Experience the sights, sounds and smells
of Jewish immigrant America as you stroll through this re-creation of
an old Boston Jewish neighborhood. Pick up a nosh at the local deli.
Take a seat at the children¹s Shule and learn a bit of Yiddish. Cast
your ballot in the garment workers union vote. The interactive
festival will feature photo exhibits, children¹s craft activities,
live klezmer music and dancing. Activities for all generations are
ongoing from 2-4pm.
During the early part of the afternoon, the Wholesale Klezmer Band
invites you to come "behind the scenes" at a traditional Yiddish
wedding. Most people have been to the khupe -- the part of the
ceremony that occurs under the wedding canopy. But we invite you to
experience some of what leads up to that moment: the khosns tish
(groom's table), the wit and wisdom of the badkhn (master of
ceremonies), the veiling of the bride, and the festive procession to
the khupe.
The culmination of the celebration will be the anniversary concert at
4pm, featuring A Besere Velt, the 70-member Yiddish Community Chorus
of the Workmen¹s Circle, and the Wholesale Klezmer Band. Stories of
Jewish immigrant life in America are woven together with Yiddish folk
music to describe the generations that forged 100 years of the
Workmen¹s Circle.
Interviews available with three generations of Workmen¹s Circle
activists. Vintage photographs of local members, buildings and
neighborhoods available, as well as photographs of current activities.
