Hammerstein's grandfather, Oscar Hammerstein I, was a famous
broadway theater owner and opera director. Hammerstein II's mother was not
Jewish and
Hammerstein was raised a Baptist. But, in a weird twist, because one of his
sons was married to
two Jewish women, and had children with each, some of his descendants are
Jewish--including one
who became Orthodox.
