How on earth does this imply that the women had previously been herded
into a compound?!?!

I refused for years, up till this past December, when my daughter and I
did sing for a Sephardic synagogue which was running a one-time only
rapprochement evening between Ashkenazi and Sephardi women to teach the
Ashkenazi women about traditional Sephardic songs and women's role in
them; in that case, I felt the teaching role was more important.
Usually, I refuse - and I work free-lance, so refusing gigs is not easy.
I explain clearly why I'm refusing it. But I may have to think about it
again, for the simple reason that, as Margot puts it, we have to earn a
living.Judith
