Winston,
Of course I meant to add a bit of levity to our sometimes passionate
discussion. (Perhaps it fell flat because I'm not a Levite.)
But, as I believe many on the list would attest, choreography
(including the basic movement called "shuckling" (spelling?), rising
on "Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh", bowing...) is a fundamental part of our
prayer. I leave it to others to comment on the spiritual effect of
moving the body as reflected by Yoga, the Shakers, Lubavitch....
And anyone who has ever been to BJ on a Friday night, might well
remember the dancing during t'filot. But there it's done by men too.
Surely music often moves us to dance. Just note the frequent posting
to our list of dance questions.
And if we can learn of the principle of Kol Isha, that women should be
seen but not heard, from commentaries on a text which speaks of
praising God through women's dance, why can't we learn from the same
text that dance by women is an appropriate way of praising God?
Bob
