Metropolitan Klezmer brings together a versatile mix of performers from New
York’s World Music and downtown scenes to traverse the far-flung map of
Yiddish culture. With eclectic instrumentation and backgrounds in styles
from Albanian to zydeco and ska to Latin jazz, they are known for mastery of
many musical moods. The group finds material in such diverse sources as
vintage film soundtracks, lesser-known dance gems and brand new retro
originals. Described as “ear-catching and inventive” by FOLK ROOTS
magazine
(U.K.), their repertoire includes expressive reflections of klezmer’s Balkan,
Greek, Turkish and Arabic strands; exuberant takes on Second Avenue swing and
tango; raucous bulgars, modal slapstick, odd-meter holiday surprises,
haunting folk tunes; and classic songs of love and protest in strikingly
unexpected versions.
“Impeccably arranged yet electrifying renditions” - Richard Gehr, VILLAGE
VOICE
“One of the best traditional klezmer bands around... a tighter, more
unified sound than ever” - George Robinson, JEWISH WEEK
Also appearing at this month's Nightbirds show are Isis (with trumpeter Pam
Fleming again!); Rose Polenzani; and a soon-to-be-announced surprise artist.
