If I can put in my two cents on this, Arak is produced all over the Middle
East, in Turkey it's called Raki and in North Africa it is called Anisette
(greatly favoured by Algerian Jews) whereas Moroccan and Tunisian Jews
prefer (respectively) Mahia and Bouka made from figs...
