Dear Miranda - My reply has nothing whatsoever to do with Fiddler and After,
nor with the Rothschilds. It is merely an excuse to say hello again after a
long break. We were celebrating the wedding of our elder son on Wed 3rd Jan
2001. He married a beautiful girl from London, amidst great joy and happiness.
Our other 'children' (now certainly adults!) who live in England, also came out
for the wedding.
A few months ago I got a call from Pieter-Louis Van Dijk's wife Suzi in
connection with vocal music, she was looking for songs either in Hebrew or
Yiddish. She is preparing to do a Masters degree at U C T and needs a
song/or/songs in 'another' language for recital purposes. I gave her a pile of
stuff to look through. Her husband is of course an excellent pianist, so they
whipped through all the material which seemed appealing to her. I somehow doubt
she'll decide on anything special, but it is up to her to make the choice. I
offered to help her with Yiddish or Hebrew pronunciation.
Fond regards from Cape Town.

I saw The Rothschilds in a small theatre in NYC in the past 10 years - sorry
to be so vague. It was done in an intimate setting, almost theatre in the
round and was very successful.
I think that part of its failure before was that it was really an intimate
musical done in too large a setting.
There is even a one man show based on the score. I think it is Cantor Bernie
Dienstag who performs this very successfully.
I too love the music.
