Hi folks,
For those of you within the vicinity of Philadelphia and/or New York City,
Seth Austen and Beverly Woods will be teaching and performing Klezmer music
there on December 9 & 10, 2000.
If you'd like to hear a sample of klezmer music, I've just posted an MP3
of Fiselekh, a traditional klezmer melody (previously unreleased), on the
website. There's also a real audio clip of that tune. Go to
<http://www.sethausten.com>, click on the klezmer page, and you'll find the
links.

Saturday December 9: Introduction to Klezmer, 6:30 p.m. Philadelphia

Klezmer, the traditional music of the eastern-European Jews, is currently
enjoying a major revival. Seth and Beverly will briefly discuss klezmer
music and its ongoing evolution. They will demonstrate some of the scales
and rhythms typically used in klezmer, and then will teach a few tunes by
ear from the traditional repertoire. Please bring your instruments. This
workshop is hands on and open to instrumentalists or singers of all levels.
You must be a PFS member to attend, however, it is possible to join up that

About Seth Austen & Beverly Woods:
Seth Austen: mandola, acoustic guitar and fiddle. Seth is a virtuoso
multi-instrumentalist whose work of 25 years includes numerous concerts,
recordings and workshops in Celtic, Appalachian, delta blues and new
acoustic. Seth has composed music for a PBS documentary, To Our Credit:
Bootstrap Banking in America and the World, and has written instruction
books for Mel Bay Publications. Seth, a descendant of 19th and 20th century
cantors from Vilnius, Lithuania and Brooklyn, NY, brings an innovative
approach to adapting klezmer music for acoustic guitar, using various open
tunings, fingerstyle and flatpicking techniques. Seth plays the rarely heard
mandola, the mandolin family equivalent to the viola, preferring its lower
pitch and warmer tone for the sonorities of klezmer and also plays fiddle,
the primary instrument of the traditional 19th century eastern European
Jewish music ensemble.
Beverly Woods: hammered dulcimer, tsimbl, concertina and piano. Beverly is a
virtuoso multi-instrumentalist with 25 years of experience playing Celtic,
New England contradance music and international folkdance music. Beverly is
among the roster of performers at Faneuil Hall in Boston and is one of only
a few people playing klezmer music on the hammered dulcimer. Beverly also
plays the tsimbl, an eastern European hammered dulcimer that was an
important instrument in 19th century Jewish ensembles. Beverly rounds out
the duo with concertina and a strong piano style rooted in years of
classical and contradance playing.
Please come if you can, and tell your friends!
