Traditional Sh'ma

Does anyone know where the traditional tune for the Sh'ma originated or who
composed it?

A library patron has asked, and besides telling him what an extensive search
he will have and where he might start, I could not give him an answer.

Thanks for your wisdom!  I am sure this will spark interesting discussion,
as do most topics on this list!
