A WEEKEND OF KLEZMER IN IOWA

THE WHOLESALE KLEZMER BAND, known for melding traditional Yiddish
music and songs of social conscience in a lively, earthy style, will
bring its music to Iowa City and Grinnell, Iowa on Nov. 4 and 5.

The eight-member band, which has performed at the Clinton inaugural
celebration, at Carnegie Hall and up and down the East Coast, will
make its Midwest debut with a concert Saturday at 7 p.m. at the
University of Iowa Hillel, 122 East Market St, Iowa City. The event,
sponsored by Hillel, the Iowa City Jewish Federation and Agudas Achim
Congregation, is free and open to the public. (Reservations for the
Federation 's Campaign 2000 Kickoff dinner at 5 p.m. can be made by
calling Hillel at (319) 338-0778.)

Wholesale, with four recordings to its credit, will also present a
concert Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in Grinnell College's Sebring-Lewis Hall,
as well as in two workshops that afternoon: a history of klezmer at 2

"The Yiddish word heymish -- meaning homey and familiar -- best
sums up The Wholesale Klezmer Band," writes Seth Rogovy in his recent book,
'The Essential Klezmer'. "Based in western Massachusetts since 1982, the
group plays a soulful brand of music with a distinctive, Old World flavor,
in spite of the fact that much of its repertoire is modern or original.''
Wholesale's uncompromised European sound -- a blend of original
songs and timeless melodies -- is steeped in the Jewish tradition of tikkun
olom, repair of the world.
Dirty Linen magazine says, ''It is the balance they achieve between
social understanding and social satire that marks The Wholesale Klezmer
Band as a truly great klezmer band.''
Online critic Ari Davidow writes, "This is not klezmer/funk fusion
or world music with kosher style ornamentations; this is the real stuff,"
"It's a new Yiddish music, mixing theater, tradition and a political
awareness and responsibility that is central to their faith .... an
exceptional band that honors tradition by carrying it forward.''
