It also, not uncleverly, I thought, makes the anthropological/mythopoetic
link with the scapegoat (scapechicken!) -- a point that several
list-correspondents seem to have missed. (See Leviticus XVI.) And of
course, folk music is the perfect medium for preserving folk custom.
