The bands? sets will be preceded by a *free* 7pm reading & book signing by
Seth Rogovoy, author of THE ESSENTIAL KLEZMER (Algonquin Books of Chapel
Hill).

Both music groups' shows will feature material from =Mosaic Persuasion=
(distributed worldwide by Stern?s Music), a collaborative project traversing
a rich variety of styles within klezmer's extended tradition. The bands play
everything from folk tunes and raucous wedding dances to labor anthem, love
song, Yiddish tango and swing. Using a wide array of instruments familiar
and exotic, they perform their own interpretations of material from vintage
Yiddish film soundtracks and classic Second Avenue theater, plus klezmer
pieces rooted in Turkish and Arabic traditions, poetry by Itsik Manger, and
repertoire of the Hungarian Kalever Rebbe, as well as Yiddish-inspired
original composition. The new CD?s title refers both to an arcane term for
Jewishness (Mosaic as in the Five Books of Moses, persuasion as in belief
system) and to the eclectic yet unified (mosaic) quality of this cultural
approach.

METROPOLITAN KLEZMER, founded in 1994 by drummer Eve Sicular, brings together
top players from New York?s downtown and World music scenes whose musical
backgrounds span sounds from Albanian to Zydeco. CD reviews below.

ISLE OF KLEZBOS was formed in 1998 and became the first klezmer band on
Michigan Womyn?s Music Festival?s Night Stage. Members have also played with
The Indigo Girls, Burning Spear, The Klezmatics, Opera Vindaloo, Rajah Rock,
Los Mas Valientes and Queen Latifah. The Village Voice calls them an
?all-female powerhouse klezmer sextet;? according to The Jewish Week, they
are ?a super-group...with an offbeat sense of humor and a relaxed sense of
swing.?

>From George Robinson, JEWISH WEEK, on =Mosaic Persuasion=:
"A tighter, more unified sound that ever, with leader Eve Sicular booting
things along from her drum kit. A band that can handle any tempo and a wide
range of moods with equal mastery."

>From FOLK ROOTS Mag (England), on =Yiddish For Travelers= [MK's debut disc]:
"subtle but ear-catching arrangements...strands of Greek fire, substance and
rhythm... tone colours that show a Turkish leaning here reawaken themes that
over-exposure by others elsewhere had jaded. Pleasantly inventive."
