Helen - I think I indicated in my original post, that "shibesh" in 
Yiddish can mean tip, particularly a small tip, and for musicans. The 
Ashkenazic and Sephardic custom of yelling "shibesh" are 
interestingly, the same. The mystery is yelling "Shabes" instead of 
"shibesh", and you already read my take on the explanation: blame the 
Litvaks and their pronunciation. If Rivkind refers to yelling "Shabes" 
in addition to "Shibesh", i (we) would indeed like to know. thank
