Ruth Yaakov Ensemble

Spurred by a recent discussion on this list, I have finally put my review of
the 1998 Ruth Yaakov Ensemble album that we were discussing. Actual music
samples should follow shortly.

And speaking of Sephardic music that =wasn't= mentioned, I am shocked that no
one talked about Cantor Emil Zrihan, who has been recorded on Piranha. We saw
him at last year's Ashkenaz festival and were blown away by the power and
beauty of his singing. It may be a category different from the folk music sung
by Yaakov, et al, but I would think (pending correction) that this, too, is
part of Sephardic tradition, and a part that has been largely invisible in this
country. Indeed, I think it was Judy Pinnolis who pointed out last year that
there was some irony that Zrihan was a best-seller overseas, but unknown in the
US. Based on what we heard, that is most unfortunate.
