I was wondering if anyone on the list has or knows where I could obtain a
copy of Saul Tchernichovsky's wedding idylls "Wedding in Elkis" (forgive
spelling if incorrect)either in translation or in the original Hebrew.
The poetry is discussed in Rivkind's book and sounds quite interesting.
It apparently includes information about the meeting of the inlaws before
the wedding, the koilitch dance/ ceremony, the kosher dance and more. Below
are the bits that I had translated from Rivkind but it would be nice to read
the whole thing from beginning to end.
?Even though Mordecai said, ?I will pay for all the dance expenses? the
guests insisted on paying for freylekhs and more freylekhs.....?
?Then the musicians came and Yosl the jester with them.
The klezmers stood together, tuned their instruments and started playing a
sad tune, a beautiful tune of separation.
The musicians again received wine and other spirits and desserts.
And they sat in the rented trailer (like a covered cart) that was waiting
for them.
And they parted contentedly from the house of Mordecai with blessings,
because they were very well compensated by their hosts.?
