Re: words to kanaria?

Hi, Carol.

I am always interested in hearing about early Ladino recordings known to
list members. Everyone may please email me privately if you prefer with
details.

The song you are seeking, Ven Canaryo, was translated into Ladino and
performed by Jack Mayesh. It appeared on the Mere label, Mere 6001A (matrix
Balkan 6001-A.) I show it as based on the Turkish song "Benim güzel
bübülim" (My beautiful nightingale), but of course the Greek, Turkish,
Jewish, Armenian, etc. communities freely traded songs back and forth. The
song was recorded in June or July of 1948 in New York, NY, at a time the
Mayesh family was living in Los Angeles. Mayesh was accompanied by
Theodore Kappas, Kanoon. The words I have are as follows:

VEN CANARIO

Pasharos de mil y un color
Pos las vayes van bolando
Dulces cantes de amor
Todo el dia van cantando

Y la boz mas melodioza
Que me aze despertar
Es la tuya canario
Que me aze encantar

Ven canario ven a mi lado
Porque de ti sto inamorado

Tu cantar tan melodiozo
Alegra mi corason
Yo me siento muy ditchozo
Te quero y con passion

Con tu dulce melodia
Antes del amanesser
Me dezvelo cada dia
Y me yeno de plazer

Ven canario ven a mi lado
Porque de ti sto inamorado

Let me know if this doesn't match the recording you have and I will dig out
the pliego for the actual recording.

Best,

Joel
