April release of Moroccan music

This just in from the Rounder Records catalog....Is it Jewish music? Rounder
apparently thinks not (note FILE UNDER at end of listing)...

Various Artists
Sacred Music of the Moroccan Jews, From the Paul Bowles Collection
Rounder 821 615 087-2 (2 CD-Set)
Street Date: April 18, 2000
In 1959, Paul Bowles recorded in Morocco a wide variety of music from the
different ethnic groups of that country, including the Jewish communities of
Mekness and Essaouira. The recordings include a live service for the
conclusion of the Sabbath that affords the listener the opportunity to
experience the content and atmosphere of a Maghrebi synagogue, albeit one
reflecting the winds of change then underway among Moroccan Jews. This
two-CD set presents that service, as well as additional recordings of
Andalusian Hebrew music. Edited by Edwin Seroussi, with the assistance of
Rabbi Meir Attiya -- one of the leading authorities and performers of
Moroccan Jewish religious music in Israel today ? this set presents a rare
glimpse into one of the most venerable Jewish musical traditions.
Tracks: CD 1: A Synagogue Service and Miscellaneous Religious Songs: Evening
service for the conclusion of the Sabbath; Egyptian melodies with Hebrew
texts; Religious songs in the Algerian (djiri) style. CD 2: Andalusian
Hebrew Music: Andalusian Hebrew music from Essaouira (Mogador); Treq in
Hijaz el kabir (from the compendium Yismah Yisrael)
Available on CD. UPC number 6-82161-5087-2-6
