Re: Maqam; and Turkish music

Dear Bob,

what you say is true. In some communities, a calendar shows the Maqam
in which the service will be performed for each shabat of the year,
so that the qahal will know what music to expect each week.
I have listened to makamat being widely performed here in Milan,
where the Lebanese tradition has been wonderfully re-constructed by
hazan Henry Maknouz (from Beirut).

Fairly interesting studies on this issue have been carried on Syrian
(especially Aleppo) and Turkish traditions, by Franc Alvarez-Pereyre,
Edwin Seroussi and Zev Feldman (who lectured about Turkish tradition
at Ashkenaz last year). Most of these studies have been published by
the Hebrew University "Yuval" series. I know of an extensive study on
the Syrian tradition in Brooklyn carried on by Mark Kligman. Maybe
other list members can be more detailed about this (I am still away
from my books/sources).

On Turkish liturgical music, check the CD by S. Benaroya published in
the "Musical Traditions in Israel" series by the Jewish Music
Research Centre at the Hebrew University.

As far as the comparison between makam and nusah, I wouldn't know
what to tell you. It is important to consider that makam is a much
broader field, and of course it is not simply a "Jewish" matter.
