Handy system, but does it feel right?
A d played over a d minor chord is different from the same note played over a
c minor chord, and, in case the musicians accidentally listen to each other,
will be played differently too. When the pianist changes voicings, it will
affect the melody playing, and so it will the other way round, talking about
good music.
Treating melody and harmony differently gives information about the different
things happening on stage, but does not cover what?s happening in the
listener?s mind, where mostly all information is brought together to a single
sensual experience.
However, I can?t think of a better, all-including, and possibly becoming too
complicated system myself. I?m glad I can leave this up to you
musicologists... ;-)
