(adv.) New! "The Art of Klezmer Clarinet" from Margot Leverett

______________________________________________________________________

Margot Leverett has given us a gift of an album of traditional and original klezmer music. With her playing and via the album notes, she lovingly pays tribute to her teacher, Sid Beckerman, his father, Shloimke, and other influences - Naftule Brandwein, Dave Tarras, Max Epstein, and Ben Bayzler.

You may know Leverett from her association with the Klezmer Conservatory Band, the Klezmatics, and currently, with Mikva. She has also taught and encouraged many students over the years at KlezKamp.

Leverett's clarinet sings; her playing is masterful and clean, without being clinical or cold. While the pieces she presents are faithful to the originals, she plays them with her own voice - and at times her ornamentation reminds one of scat singing! (e.g. firen di mekhutonim aheym). The moods of the songs span most of the klezmer genre - from Yiddish Theater, lively freylekhs, stately horas, and to Hasidic. She has written two pieces - one a classic doina, the other a hora, shvesterel. There are pieces familiar to klezmer clarinet aficionados, such as the Epstein hora from "Dukes of Freylekh" and the Sid Medley (found on Beckerman's "Klezmer Plus" album as freylekhs in d minor). There are also less-well-known tunes, such as the sweetly longinglustige hasidim.

She is joined by six klezmer music mevinim (experts) some of whose names you will recognize from the Klezmer Conservatory Band - fiddler Mimi Rabson, bassist Jim Guttman, trombonist David Harris, accordionist Evan Harlan, and percussionists Grant Smith and Bob Weiner. Leverett also appears as a side musician on the saxophone!

The 17 selections include: Doina, Gasn Nign, Bulgar Medley, firen di mekhutonim aheym, Oy Tate S'iz Gut, Skocne, Freilicher Yontov, Sam & Dave, Heymisher Bulgar, lustige hasidim , Epstein Hora, Sid Meldley, Shvesterel, Ben's Tune, Yiddisher Soldat, Ruchelle's Bulgar and 15 years away from Home.

P.S. For those in or near Boston, Leverett will play Johnny D's in Somerville on Tuesday, January 18th at 8:30 and 10:00.

"The Art of Klezmer Clarinet" costs $15 + $2.50 postage.
