lie-lie-lie vs. die-die-die

Can anyone explain why when we sing nigunim in my synagogue everyone sings
"lie-lie-lie" (Paul Simon/"The Boxer"-style) rather than the more Yiddish
way, "die-die-die"???

what's the musicological history of this?
