Universal Jewish Music Licensing

Over on my Hanashir list for Jewish songleaders, performers and music
educators (where the focus is more on music of the contemporary liturgical
bent than one might find here) we have started an interesting discussion on
the issue of educating the Jewish music buying/listening public on both the
legal and halachich issues surrounding copyright. The discussion was started
by Cantor Jeff Klepper, perhaps known to some of you as part of Kol B'Seder
or through his own solo work.

The suggestion has been made that we pursue the establishment of a clearing
house specifically for Jewish music, as well as begin educating the public
about copyright, which is so woefully abused in the Jewish community-but
most especially in Jewish religious education settings.

If Avi permits, I might cross-post some of the messages posted to Hanashir.
Even if not, I'd love to hear this subject tackled here as well.
