To the listing of Slim Gaillard's affectionate takes on Yiddish popular music I
should like to add "Vol Vistu Gaily Star" (listen to the banter between Slim &
Slam toward the end of the piece) and "Boot-Ta-La-Za," set to the chords of
"Yosl, Yosl". Both selections are included (along with "Matzoh Balls") on the
CD compilation "The Groove Juice Special." Cab Calloway acknowledged, maybe in
his memoirs, that cantorials strongly influenced his singing style. The
Calloway CD "Are You Hep to the Jive?" includes a classic of cryptojudaica,
"Who's Yehoodi?"
