I can't advise re the flute specifically in klezmer--not my field--but
for those (including, obviously, klezmer aficianados and players) who
would like some scholarly background and context on the flute in
(ancient) Jewish music generally, I recommend a gevalt article by the
distinguished musicologist Hanoch Avenary, "Flutes for a Bride or a Dead
Man: The Symbolism of the Flute According to Hebrew Sources" (i.e.,
flutes at ancient weddings, funerals, etc., replete with references to
the flute in Talmudic and, I think, other sources), which appeared in a
scholarly journal called Orbis Musicae, Vol. I, No. 1 (it must have been
its first issue--I hadn't realized that), August 1971 (pp. 11-24).
