Julie Epstein alerted me to this (once from =each= of his e-mail accounts!)
It was announced on July 6th that the Epstein Brother are among 15 master
artists chosen by the NEA for National Heritage Fellowships. I believe
that this is the first time that the NEA has honored klezmorim, or, for
that matter, Jewish artists. Their choice of the Epstein Brothers is
great, and I am especially excited along with Julie and Willie and Max.
The bio, as printed on the NEA website reads:
EPSTEIN (EP-Steen) BROTHERS: MAX, WILLIAM "WILLIE" & JULIUS "JULIE" -- Jewish
Klezmer musicians of Tamarac, Florida -- were acclaimed in the 1950 and 60s as
"the kings of klezmer," and are now the grandfathers leading a tremendous
renaissance of Klezmer, a rollicking yet soulful instrumental music at the
heart
of many Jewish celebrations.
