(Sorry, accidentally fired off the e before it was complete).
The Gershwin composition (and the Grofe orchestration used by the Whiteman
band) featured not the famous "wail" but a decidedly un-klezmer17 note scaler
run. The opening was a musical joke foisted on the band (and Gershwin) by
reed virtuoso and non-klezmer player Ross Gorman. His joke at Ted Lewis'
expense, pleased Gershwin who, hearing it for the first at the final
rehearsal before the Aeolian Hall premier, allowed it to stay in. The rest,
as they say, is...um...history....
